11ft Horse made out of recycled CDs

This amazing horse sculpture is 11ft in height and was created using5000 recycled CD’s. Dean created this art-piece to demonstrate whatcan be achieved using reclaimed CD’s & to showcase his artistictalents. Dean had already created several large sculptures forschools & he felt it was time to showcase his talent to the art world.

9th annual Environmental Rock festival will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May 2011

The 9^th annual Environmental Rock festival will take place on Bank Holiday Monday 2^nd May 2011 at The Hobbit in Bevois Valley!

The FREE daytime event, which has gone from strength to strength since it’s inception in 2003, attracts hundreds of visitors with its unique mix of music, environmental awareness, workshops and activities and ethical products for sale. 2011 promises to be the biggest and best event yet.

The festival coincides with the beginning of Southampton University Students’ Union Environmental and Ethical week, but welcomes everyone, whether young or old.

Visitors can enjoy delicious organic food available courtesy of Chef Bernie, whilst speaking to a range of organisations including Transition Southampton, New Forest National Park, Southampton Natural History Society and Greenpeace, whilst companies such as Wikaniko and October Books will sell a range of ethical products.

All stallholders share the organisers’ commitment to helping preserve and improve our environment for future generations, and many of them have attended Environmental Rock for several years, demonstrating their commitment to both the event and the wider cause.

The musical background for the event will be provided by a host of talented local acts performing on separate indoor and outdoor stages during the day. In addition, after last years’ successful launch, an evening gig will also take place showcasing yet more quality bands, costing only £2 after 7.30pm. More details about all the bands will be announced very soon.

Finally, no May Bank Holiday event would be complete without Morris Dancers, so by popular demand, we are pleased to announce that Samhaim Morris will return to Environmental Rock to perform!

3000 Recycled CDs in a field

Hydrock in Northampton, UK came to us looking for 3000 CDs to be used in a field to stop the birds nesting around one of their projects. See the pictures below, all CDs will be recycled into the plastics industry after they have finished with them.

Walkers experiments with crisp packets made of potatoes

Recycled potato peelings could be used to make environmentally-friendly crisp packets, a leading snack firm has said.

Walkers said it had already developed cellulose crisp bags made from wood pulp – but this resulted in “crackly” bags that might put off customers.

Waste which should be recycled is ending up as landfill because it is not being separated enough.
Thousands of tons of waste that was shown as having been recycled is ending up on council landfill sites.

Bales of plastic bottles mixed with paper, cans and even glass are having to be dumped. Watch the report here.

Fantastic Panda chair made out of recycled CDs

The Panda chair is made out of recycled CDs, 4232 of them. It looks stylish, modern and surprisingly comfortable eco chair. It was designed by Belén Hermosa as an eco design project and exhibited at the Habitat Valencia Forward Show, Spain. More information about her is below.

Panda Chair made of recycled CDs

Belén Hermosa (Bilbao, 1978) carried out, in her natal city, an Industrial Technical Engineering, later on, she moved to the University of Coventry, in England where she studied Industrial Design, a professional passion she discovered during her stay in Great Britain. The accomplishment of different specialized curses and works as freelance, together with the experience obtained as product designer in the company “Fiat Advanced Design” in Milan and in different design studios in León, Bilbao and Barcelona, allowed her to extend and complete her knowledge in this field.

In 2005, she received the First Prize and a Mention of Honour in the “Liderpack” awards, for the “Pack of Chopsticks for Incompetents”, made together with Laura Millán, Industrial designer of Barcelona.

For second consecutive year, she has exhibited in the NUDE, at Habitat Valencia Forward Show. After the good welcome of last year with her Flow·er Bag, she decided to repeat the experience, on this occasion with 2 projects; the chair PANDA and the set sweet lights, sweet floors. Both were very well received by the public.

The CDs are an important problem in terms of pollution.

The polycarbonate is an expensive and hardly recyclable material when it comes from a CD. 4.232 of these containers of data, handed over by the company Sarbide, have been reused to form the panda chair, of modern and technological aspect.

Recycled CDs into a Tower lamp

Another use of recycled CDs, why not make them into a fabulous tower lamp as Russell Jones has shown on his blog. The lamp uses a cold cathode lamp which fits into the centre of the CDs.
